Advanced Aquarium Technologies leads the design and construction of the National Aquarium of Denmark - Northern Europe's largest aquarium.

Project Overview

Opened to the public in March 2013, Den Bla Planet (The Blue Planet) is a 9,700-square-meter award-winning building designed by 3XN architects.

Inspired by circulating whirlpool currents, the aquarium incorporates Rainforest, African Great Lakes, Evolution and Adaption, Cold Water and Warm Ocean zones.

The aquarium features 53 different exhibits, a 4,000,000-litre ocean tank and a 16 meter-long long shark tunnel.

AAT provided all of the leading specialist aquarium design and construction services. Our work included state of the art life support systems, small and large aquariums, acrylic viewing panel installation, tunnel designs, and installation of rockwork, scenery and specialist waterproofing.

In its first year, over 1.3 million visitors toured the aquarium.

Phase 1

Design

The first phase addresses feasibility, budgeting, concept development, creative themes, visitor-experience design and journey-mapping, detailed engineering and project planning.

Phase 2

Build

The second phase focuses on acrylic manufacturing, construction and installation, the supply and installation of life support systems, waterproofing, lighting, filling and stocking the tanks.

Phase 3

Operate

The third phase includes handing the aquarium over to its owners and operators. Also included this phase, for older aquariums, are services relating to refurbishment and renovation.
