We maximise direct control or influence over the animal’s health and wellbeing at every step from acquisition through transportation to aquarium introduction.
AAT never sources wild whales or wild dolphins.
We discourage new aquariums from creating whale or dolphin exhibits.
We have played an active role in relocating beluga whales out of a public aquarium to a specialist coastal sanctuary.
AAT’s heritage lies beneath the ocean, swimming with the fish. Our founder, an accomplished diver, has pioneered many humane and low-impact animal capture techniques.
No collateral damage
Utterly different from ‘fishing’, our Precision Acquisition methods involve marine biologists and divers with phenomenal expertise in animal identification catching individual animals, one at a time.
Wild-sourcing is only undertaken when in-captivity breeding sources are unavailable or impractical. We use animal-safe capture techniques, adapted vessels with specialist facilities and swift transfers to high-quality, species-appropriate tanks.
AAT quarantine and aquaculture facilities are overseen by marine biologists and other animal care professionals.
We also leverage in captivity breeding programs around the world.
