AAT installs 3-meter cylindrical aquarium in The Science Place, the first educational building in Australia to achieve a LEED® Gold rating for environmentally sustainable design.

Project Overview

The Science Place – an $85M building at JCU’s Douglas campus – is a four-level, 12,000 square-meter hub for teaching and research with ultramodern laboratories and technology-enabled active learning spaces.

Advanced Aquarium Technologies (AAT) built the aquarium’s authentic simulation of a rockwork bommie in the company’s quality-controlled offsite manufacturing facility and transported to the site for installation.

An AAT Skid-Mounted Life Support System (LSS) keeps the water clean, healthy and in perfect condition.

In addition to making a spectacular feature at the entrance to this innovative building, staff and students can use the aquarium for marine research and teaching opportunities too.

Phase 1

Design

The first phase addresses feasibility, budgeting, concept development, creative themes, visitor-experience design and journey-mapping, detailed engineering and project planning.

Phase 2

Build

The second phase focuses on acrylic manufacturing, construction and installation, the supply and installation of life support systems, waterproofing, lighting, filling and stocking the tanks.

Phase 3

Operate

The third phase includes handing the aquarium over to its owners and operators. Also included this phase, for older aquariums, are services relating to refurbishment and renovation.
