One of the star attractions at Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is a 5m-long Australian crocodile named King Croc. This giant creature weighs in – at the time of our project – at an extraordinary 750kg and is expected to grow much bigger. The new exhibit was designed to upgrade the visitor experience and capitalize on previously unused space by creating a mezzanine viewing floor
AAT designed and manufactured the crocodile exhibit life support system for King Croc’s home at the Dubai Aquarium. The life support system was created using three pre-plumbed sand filters on a single skid along with a separate skid containing the heat pumps, UV sterilizer and electrical distribution boards. This project helped propel the acceptance of skid mounted LSS components as plant room space was at a premium which would not have facilitated a slower more sequential installation. The skids were lifted from street level directly to the plant room once roof sections were removed greatly reducing on-site time.
AAT also completed waterproofing works to the exhibit concrete shell which was poured onto the existing structural slab.
The Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo is a signature attraction at The Dubai Mall, the world’s second-largest shopping centre by land area and the most-visited shopping and leisure destination on Earth (84 million shoppers in 2019).
With 33,000 animals, world-recording-breaking viewing panels, a 270-degree walkthrough tunnel and an underwater zoo, the aquarium is exceptional.
